“Q: The program’s “emphasis has been on music that’s relevant to the community.” What does this mean, exactly?
A: It means that in a community as diverse as City Heights, a violin program steeped in classical, European repertoire and tradition, is perhaps not the most relevant to a family that has recently immigrated from a country in Africa or South America. Why make it relevant? Because relevance creates “sanctuary…”
Capoeira is call-and-response, basic rhythm and movement. If I can find a common thread through music for the family that doesn’t speak any English, I’ve made an important connection for all of us.”
