This story comes from the Queens Gazette of New York City, where Mario Espindola has named his Brazilian restaurant after the berimbau, the central instrument of capoeira. Unfortunately, the article leaves much to be desired and contains no actual information on the restaurant itself. For those interested in checking out Mario’s eatery, a Google search yielded this website, presumably for his restaurant, located in the West Village of Manhattan.
It seems like every other day, we hear about another capoeira group that is flourishing in their own corner of the world. It’s great to see them get local or even national news coverage, which can only benefit the group and help it reach more people. Earlier this week, a local news outlet in Bournemouth, England posted a story on Origens do Brasil, a capoeira group that has been alive and well in Bournemouth for many years.
Capoeira, Black Panther, and Chadwick Boseman
Actor Chadwick Boseman, chosen to portray the character on the big screen in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, said in an interview with EW in December:“There are some animal forms, but not just cat. He could be a snake, or various different styles. Obviously there’s an opportunity to do some capoeira.”Now, I’m not sure why it’s so obvious to Boseman, but let’s speculate.
Detroit Brooks, age 67, of San Diego, CA just began his career as a capoeirista. He’s showing his fellow students, community, and the world something a lot of capoeiristas already know: capoeira knows no age limits.
