In a recent article, international magazine OkayAfrica.com points out the heavy European tilt of official Olympic sports and proposes seven African sports to consider for the worldwide competitive stage—chief among them, capoeira.

Paired in this list with ngolo, the Angolan art thought to have contributed to capoeira’s development in Brazil by West African slaves (depending on who you ask), capoeira is briefly and rightfully summarized as an Afro-Brazilian art that “combines elements of dance, martial arts and music.” Surely, Brazil’s rich African heritage helped inspire the article, as the country is hosting its first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this summer.
